An “IrisBG” system consists of a Windows Client and a database. The Windows Client can be installed on any PC running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. The database is installed according to your preferences regarding database platform and operating system. IrisBG currently supports Microsoft SQL Server, MS Access and MySQL databases. In this document we will outline some of the most common installation scenarios for IrisBG.
Typically used by small gardens without local network and/or no need for a multi-user environment. The Windows Client AND database are installed on the same computer. Any supported database can be used, but Microsoft Access is the most popular choice in this scenario.
Local network installation
Internet connected PC with Virtual Private Network
This configuration can be used when the user has no access to the database server in the local network and the PC and database server are both connected to the internet. The communication is made possible through a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel. The end user will have to log on to the VPN before a connection to the database can be obtained.
Internet connected PC with encrypted connection
This configuration can be used when the user has no access to the database server in the local network and the PC and database server are both connected to the internet. The database is made available on the internet and the database traffic is encrypted. This configuration will require the installation of a public key certificate on the database server. The end user can obtain connection with the database server without having to perform any extra operations.
Internet connected PC with unprotected connection
This configuration can be used when the user has no access to the database server in the local network and the PC and database server are both connected to the internet. This configuration is not recommended as a permanent solution, but may be considered as an option for testing purposes.
IrisBG hosted by terminal services
The windows client is installed in a terminal server environment that has access to the database server. The terminal server can be made available in a local network and/or directly on the internet. You may need additional software licenses for any other software packages you would like to have available on the terminal server. Printing can in some cases be problematic.
Internet connected PC with internet hosted cloud database
With this setup, IrisBG can be used in a multi-user environment from different locations without the need of a local network. The database can be supplied as a service via internet by Botanical Software Ltd.
