In IrisBG, data can be accessed through a Windows PC user interface, a handheld device (IrisBG Mobile) or a Web-based interface (Garden Explorer).

The PC software will run on all recent versions of Windows and is available for several database systems.

IrisBG does not depend on third party products that require additional license fees, but license fees may be incurred, depending on your choice of database, web server platform, etc.

The IrisBG PC installation follows best practices and recommendations from Microsoft to ensure a smooth installation on all supported Microsoft Windows platforms. We have made a considerable effort to make IrisBG easy to set up for smaller gardens with few resources, as well as large organizations with high expectations and requirements.

  1. Even though Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, we will for the time being offer Window XP support and compatibly. However, we strongly recommend Windows XP users to upgrade to a more recent version of Windows.
  2. To install IrisBG on Apple Mac, you would need virtualization software such as Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion.
  3. If mapping is used, a SQLite map tile cache and other map related files will be dynamically created in the local user profile folder. The disk space required will depend on map usage, but is unlikely to exceed 200MB.
  4. Some reports and labels produce Excel spread sheets or Word documents. To view Excel spread sheets you will require Microsoft Office, Open Office or a similar product. Word documents are produced using mail merge and require Microsoft Office 2003 or later.
  5. Some features such as mapping, IPNI validation, Garden Explorer Upload and Web Search will require an Internet connection. Firewall must allow HTTP traffic.
  6. 64 bit Windows is recommend for users who need to process very large datasets.

Mapping

The Mapping module requires a connection to the internet to access internet hosted map providers such as Google, Bing and other online Web Map Service (WMS).

If you wish to use your own maps, they will need to be hosted on a WMS server.

  • If you do not have your own WMS server, the IrisBG Map hosting service can be used. The IrisBG Map hosting service supports vector based maps such as Esri Shapefiles and PostGIS databases, as well as georeferenced raster files such as GeoTIFF. Other file formats, such as AutoCAD and Vectorworks are supported by converting the map data to Shapefile format or a supported georeferenced raster format.
  • If you are considering hosting your own WMS server, you can use products such as GeoServer and some of the Esri ArcGIS server products. Please note that the WMS has to be accessible on the internet if you are planning to use the service with your Garden Explorer website.
  • We recommend that the WMS supports the World Geodetic System (WGS84) projection (EPSG:4326) or/and the Web Mercator projection (EPSG:3857).

Local self-hosted database

Your IrisBG database can be hosted in your local network or on a single PC.

IrisBG uses relational databases (SQL) for data storage with an access technology that is database independent. Currently, the system is supported for Microsoft SQL Server 2005* or later. This includes the free SQL Server Express Edition

Support for other database platforms will be considered provided there is sufficient demand.

We recommend that your SQL Server supports SQL Server Authentication in a multi-user enviroment.

*New IrisBG databases are compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 or higher. MS SQL Server 2005 compatibility is available upon request.

Cloud hosted database service

In addition to support for locally hosted databases, IrisBG can also be supplied with our cloud database service. With this setup, IrisBG can be used in a multi-user environment from any location with internet connection, with all database management conveniently taken care of.

Requirements for the cloud database service are:

  • Internet broadband connection with fixed public IP address, good line quality and with a measured broadband speed of a at least 1.0/0.25 Mbit. Higher bandwidth will increase the user experience.
  • Broadband firewall must allow outbound TCP traffic on port 1433. Optionally, you can also add a filter on the IP range of the data centres where your data is stored. Please get in touch for more details.

Use the tools below to measure broadband speed, line quality and data center latency:

For more information about this service, read our article "IrisBG Cloud database service".

Database disk usage

A plant collection with 10,000 accessions and 5,000 taxa will use between 50MB and 100MB of disk space on Microsoft SQL Server (excluding images).

If you store your images using the default 3 Megapixel resolution, you would require approximatly 1GB per 1,000 jpg images.

Some examples:

  • 5.000 accessions, 3,000 taxa, 1,000 3MP images. 1.1 GB.
  • 10.000 accessions, 5,000 taxa, 5,000 3MP images. 5.1 GB.
  • 20.000 accessions, 10,000 taxa, 10,000 3MP images. 10.2 GB.
  • 100.000 accessions, 20,000 taxa, 25,000 3MP images. 25.5 GB.

Alternativly, you can configure your database to handle high resolution images (Contact us for details).

If you store your images with a jpg format of 25 Megapixel resolution, you would require approximatly 1GB per 250 images.

Some examples:

  • 5.000 accessions, 3,000 taxa, 1,000 25MP images. 4.1 GB.
  • 10.000 accessions, 5,000 taxa, 5,000 25MP images. 20.1 GB.
  • 20.000 accessions, 10,000 taxa, 10,000 25MP images. 40.2 GB.
  • 100.000 accessions, 20,000 taxa, 25,000 25MP images. 100.5 GB.

Network

IrisBG can be used either in a network or on a single computer.

There are no additional network requirements beyond the requirements of the database product.

Web server

The websolutions Garden Explorer and Index Seminum requires a web server that can host the ASP.NET 2.0 runtime environment. The modules are supported on Microsoft Internet Information Services version 6.5 or later.

Garden Explorer will use approximatly 10 MB of disk space for installation, 25 MB for a database with 10,000 accessions and about 75 MB per 1,000 images (web optimized).

Data Management and Security

Both web applications include a web service interface that the IrisBG Windows client uses to upload new data over HTTP (Port 80). The web applications are configured with an internal database and there is no need for a direct connection between the web server and the production database.

The upload process is either instigated manually using the Maintenance Screen or you can configure a scheduled job using the IrisBG Batch Jobs software.

Self-Hosted Garden Explorer or Index Seminum Website

For users who contemplate hosting the Garden Explorer or Index Seminum website on their own servers, please carefully consider using our Website Configuration and Styling service (See pricelist). This type of work requires very specialized website developer skills for a good result. We offer this service at a fixed price, which includes the styling of colours, logo, fonts, buttons, menus and background graphics. The end result will be a performance optimized website that has a very similar look and feel to your existing websites.

Mobile device

Devices running Windows Embedded Handheld or Windows Mobile (version 6 or later recommended) with a touch screen. A range of screen resolutions is supported. Portrait WVGA or VGA is recommended.
